For new and experienced department chairs alike, leadership can feel isolating. You’re expected to manage conflict, mentor faculty, make strategic decisions, and balance countless priorities—often without any formal preparation. That’s exactly why we launched the Department Chair Success Program (CSP).
After welcoming our inaugural cohort, one thing became clear: when chairs are supported, everything changes.
Before and After: A Measurable Shift
We surveyed participants at the start of the program and again at the end to understand their challenges—and track what changed. Early on, many described feeling underprepared for the realities of chairship, particularly when it came to navigating interpersonal conflict, managing time, and leading with confidence.
By the end of the 12-week program, the shift was striking:
- 97% said the program helped them feel more confident in navigating challenging situations and decision-making.
- 95% agreed they now have practical tools and strategies they can apply in their role.
- 79% reported an improvement in the skills to navigate conflict, compared to a majority who felt unprepared at the outset.
- 100% agreed: this program has made them a better leader.
These numbers tell a powerful story. But for many chairs, the biggest shift was internal: how they saw themselves and approached the role.
“CSP empowered me to protect my time, set boundaries, and build work/life balance. It gave me confidence in my role—and helped me see future pathways beyond it.”
— Dannette Y. Murray, PhD, CCC-SLP, James Madison University
Tools, Reflection, and Forward Momentum
Participants consistently pointed to CSP’s unique mix of structure and flexibility. Many noted that while the tools were valuable, it was the opportunity to pause and reflect that made the biggest difference. Some were new to the role. Others were nearing the end of their chairship. But across the board, they left with renewed clarity.
“This is a must-do program for new chairs who want to start their terms with purpose and focus. It was also a wonderful opportunity for me as a veteran chair to reflect and consider next steps.”
— Leigh A. Patterson, MD, MAEd
The Case for Chair Development
Department chairs are central to faculty well-being, retention, and success, but they’re often asked to lead without the tools or training they need. The Department Chair Success Program is designed to change that.
Whether you’re a newly appointed chair or a seasoned leader seeking renewed focus, CSP offers more than advice—it provides community, strategy, and momentum.
“Why not consider this investment in learning more about ways to enhance your work and life as chair?”
— Elizabeth Shaunessy-Dedrick, Ph.D., University of South Florida
