Continuing the Conversation: NCFDD and COACHE on Rethinking Faculty Mentoring

Earlier this year, NCFDD and Harvard’s Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) released a joint white paper—Redefining Mentoring in Higher Education—that challenged long-held assumptions about what effective faculty mentoring looks like. Drawing on COACHE survey data and NCFDD field-tested strategies and programs, the paper offers a roadmap for institutions ready to move beyond informal, one-size-fits-all approaches.

Now, NCFDD CEO Geoff Watson joins Dr. Todd Benson, Executive Director and Principal Investigator at COACHE, for a deeper conversation on the ideas behind the paper—and what they mean for institutional leaders today.

In the latest podcast episode COACHECast, Watson and Benson discuss:

      • The gap between how institutions talk about mentoring and what they actually provide

      • Why relying solely on individual mentors can perpetuate less successful mentoring experiences and burnout

      • What campuses can do to create more consistent systems that actually work for their faculty

Watson also reflects on what NCFDD has learned from supporting thousands of faculty members across institutions, and what it takes to build programs that meet faculty where they are.

If you’re thinking about how to improve mentoring on your campus, this conversation is a great place to start.
